I was up early checking Apple Trailers to see if our trailer was up yet - and as I was riding my motorcycle to work it happened!
trailers.apple.com/trailers/
When we started this movie five years ago, I thought it would be a blast, because everything was wide open.  In a world without cars, jobs, secret formulas, villains, etc. we would be able to do anything we wanted.  It didn't take long for reality to sink in - this was going to be a lot tougher than we thought.  Staring into this limitless world that we would build according to our rules, we were suddenly coming to grip with just how wide open this world really was.  Like when you've finished all your chores and you finally find time to do a drawing - you run to your table, open your drawing pad (or your computer, if you're more modern than me) and stare into a blank page.  And if you're like me, it's not very long before you are wishing you had just a few boundaries.  Should I draw a monster?  A witch?  A bunny?  A bunny riding a monster fleeing a witch?  Ugh.  At that point I begin scribbling, looking for something.  It can take hours or days before I find it.

So we began the search for the Croods story.  No matter what, we wanted to end with a balance of scale, humor and depth.  And I feel we accomplished that.  This trailer focuses mainly on scale.  Later trailers will dig into the humor.  Enjoy!

Ahhh yay! I found your DA!
Hi Mister Sanders! A Year ago at San Diego Comic Con, you were kind enough to give me your time and look through my portfolio, and I really appreciated your critiques and advice!! You were very encouraging and enthusiastic (despite my friend and I ambushing you, I do apologize!!), and I just wanted to pop by and say thank you again! I didn't have a DA account at the time but I eventually figured out they're kind of important in a lot of ways, hahaha. Plus I get to see more of your art, yay!
Looking forward to all your future projects and works!! C:

I know how busy of a guy you are and most probably might not answer this, but just curious. Did Disney sale your characters from Lilo and Stitch without your consent, or did you willingly give them the rights to sale them to Japan? And if which ever, how did you feel about it? Hope you answer this, though I won't get my hopes to high.

Lilo and Stitch was to be made on the condition that it look like I drew it.  It was something I debated only for a night.  This was a chance to direct my own story, and I was glad to let them have the Lilo and Stitch designs, and Nani, etc.  In a sense, it was my ticket to directing.

I wouldn't do it again, as far as releasing all rights to a particular set of characters.  I direct and write in film thanks to Lilo and Stitch, and thanks to the story experience that came before it - Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Aladdin, etc.

Nowadays, allowing a studio or company to use my styling would be on very different conditions.  My style is my signature, and I protect it.
